FAQ

Question: May we add additional items to the Christmas Eve Fun Box?
Answer:

We ask that you do not add additional items. Some of the boxes may be going to sibling sets, or to children who reside in shelters. If one of the children receive additional items it will not be saying Merry Christmas to the children who do not receive extra items.

Question: If we put additional items in the box will they be removed?
Answer:

Yes, they will be removed. Any additional items that are placed in the box will be removed and donated to a partnering shelter(s).

Question: Why are children who reside in foster care in my home county not receiving boxes?
Answer:

We are currently partnered with CASA, Children’s Home Society, Genesis Center, and 10 DHHR locations. Children who these agencies serve will receive boxes. It is our goal to increase the number of partnering agencies each year until every child who resides in foster care in WV receives a box annually.

Question: Can we choose the age and/or gender of the child who we fill a box for?
Answer:

You may choose an age range and/or gender of the child(ren) you fill a box for.

Question: What happens if I commit to fill a Christmas Eve Fun Box(es) and unexpectedly will not be able to honor my commitment?
Answer:

We understand sometimes life happens preventing us from doing what our heart desires to do. Should life happen and prevent you from honoring your commitment please let us know ASAP. If there is time left in the campaign we will assign your box commitment to someone else. If there is not time left in the campaign there is a possibility that the child may not receive a box.

Question: Can I include a bible for the book selection?
Answer:

No. We ask that you not include any religious texts.

Question: I am running late with dropping the boxes that I committed to filling off. Can I take them directly to the agency?
Answer:

No. Due to behind the scene logistics in delivery, box preparation, etc., this isn’t possible. The box you are filling may be for a child in your county or for a child on the other end of the state.

Question: I never made it to the drop off location by the requested deadline. Can I still take it to the drop off location in the next day or two?
Answer:

No. We have to honor the strict deadline in order for all boxes to be picked up and delivered to the central sorting facility for inspection, sorting into agencies, and agency pick up. The size of the project and the behind the scene logistics leave no room for delayed drop-offs or pickups. There is a possibility that if the box(es) are not dropped off by the deadline that a child(ren) will not receive a Christmas Eve Fun Box.

Question: How much money is paid to committee members and program directors?
Answer:

No committee member, student ambassador, or the program directors receive any monetary compensation. They are fellow volunteers working together with a common purpose with their fellow WV Citizens donating their time, resources, and skills.

Question: Do the Pajamas that I purchase have to be Christmas themed?
Answer:

Not at all. We ask that the movie you choose be Christmas themed, but any pajamas that are chosen will be fine and loved by the child(ren) who receives them.

Question: Can I fill a box for a child from my county?
Answer:

We view every child as a West Virginian. We only separate the counties for agency delivery, organization purposes, etc. You may be filling a box for a child from your county, a neighboring county, or a child on the opposite end of the state. The boxes are tracked by an identifier and will be matched to the agency that serves that child during sort week. When commitment sheets are provided to our fellow West Virginians to fill, they are randomly pulled from an internal selection system. This portion of the system is not organized by county of origin.

Question: Can I use a different size box or a box that I already have on hand?
Answer:

For transportation purposes we ask that each box be the same size (17″×11″×3.5″) This size box is available at the Dollar Tree for $1.00. When packing boxes into vehicles to transport the uniformity of size makes packing most effienct and allows every inch of space in the transport vehicles to be utilized.

Question: I would like to volunteer to transport boxes to the central sorting location in Barbour County WV. How do I do volunteer to do this?
Answer:

Thank you! The point of Contact Volunteer in each participating county coordinates delivery. Please send an email to BoxesWithAPurposeWV@gmail.com letting us know that you want to volunteer for transport and we will connect you to the Point of Contact Volunteer in your county.

Question: Can we fill boxes for a friend/family member’s child in foster care?
Answer:

We encourage you to do whatever you feel you can, or should, do to support families caring for the children in West Virginia. However, Boxes With A Purpose is an anonymous program.

Question: Why does the form say you will take out additional items?
Answer:

Most of these boxes will be filled in group settings. In the group setting, there could be as many as 25 boxes filled by different people or organizations. Because of this, standardiztion of contents is key to the experience.

Question: Can we include lightly used items like pajamas and stuffed animals?
Answer:

We ask that all items donated be new. There are three reasons why we ask you to include only new items. Frist, the cloth of stuffed animals and pajamas holds allergens and smells that can bother different people. Secondly, there is no exact standard for “lightly used”. Lastly, is the sensitive nature of the message that second-hand clothing items send. I must preface this with the fact that each of the founders use and dress their children and selves in second-hand clothing. However, based on current research and the mission of this program (to let each child know that they are a vlaued member of our community in whom we are willing to invest), we believe it is crucial for the items to be new.

Question: Do I have to contact the Point of Contact volunteer in my county to receive information about a child(ren) who resides in foster care (age, size, gender) so that I can fill a box?
Answer:

No. A Point of Contact volunteer coordinates behind the scene logistics such as establishing a drop-off locatino and transporting boxes to the distribution center and sharing. You can receive information about a child residing in foster care via our website: www.boxeswithapurposewv.org/fill-a-box.
